PROJECT PROPOSAL
Name: Sekolasitika Satui
Student Number: 42387411
Project Title: “Strengthening Pacific Islander Local Churches Participation and Engagement in Mainstream Community Development Practices”
Project Focus: (1-3 Words) - Cultural Community Development
Project Aim: (1 sentence providing the intention of your project)
This project aims to build stronger work relations with Pacific Islander local churches, to mobilise and maximize on the “power” position of local churches for better changes in communities, and to establish a better organized collective approach in working with Pacific Islanders.
Project Rationale: (1 sentence explaining why you think the project is necessary)
This project emanates from feedback on my personal and professional CD work with Pacific Islander CAMS and LAMP workers and other interested stakeholders who expressed frustration over the lack of involvement and participation of Pacific Islander church leaders and communities on community development processes surrounding the case of the multicultural policy review and other more pressing issues affecting PI youth and communities such as youth breaking the law, school drop outs, violence, and unemployment.
Project Action: (1-2 sentences explain your initial ideas for collective action)
To achieve the project’s aim I will utilize largely the Christian / Trust model (Christian principles and practices, sincerity, credibility and competence) through a collaborative approach of conducting a mapping of my project environment to establish who is present, the cultural context I’m dealing with, customer diagnosis and a strategic positioning of Pacific Islander local churches. I will call for a public forum with church leaders and CAMS and LAMP workers and incorporating and maximizing on the use of the IAP2 spectrum (inform, consult, involve, collaborate, empower) to achieve a collective and active participation of stakeholders.
Risk Identification: (1-2 sentences outlining the main risk(s) that you need to manage)
In undertaking this work I will need to be mindful of the fears and cultural habits of church leaders and will provide reassurance measures to reduce these fears through group activities and toolkits e.g. the Fishbowl & Samoan Circles. Also inviting and involving “expert witnesses” such as the CAMS & LAMP workers to facilitate public forum.
